Career Opportunities for Psychologists

from:

When considering psychology degree programs, it may be helpful to consider the career opportunities that are available to you. That way you can decide which of the psychology degree programs will best suit your needs in getting your dream career down the road. Psychology degrees can open many doors, so it is helpful to know your options so that you can make good education decisions and earn your degree quickly and efficiently.

One career option to consider is working at an outpatient mental health center or a substance abuse treatment clinic. Outpatient centers offer counseling for milder psychology issues, while substance abuse treatment clinics offer help and support to patients dealing with different addictions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in this career field will grow the fastest in the next ten years.

Some psychology degree programs may lead you towards a career in a private practice. This will generally require a doctoral-level psychology degree and several years of experience. Approximately forty percent of psychologists are self-employed, which is about six times the average for professional workers. Of course, a self-employed career offers its own set of challenges and benefits.

If you enjoy working with young people, you could consider psychology degree programs that set you up with a career to work with the school system. School psychologists are in a high demand. Be sure to research the requirements in your area, however, as some school psychologists also need to have a teaching credential in order to work.

If education is your thing but you prefer working with a more mature crowd, you could consider a career at a university or college. A psychologist with a doctoral-level degree can have the opportunity to work on the faculty or in the research department of some of the most prestigious universities.

Other career options opened through psychology degree programs involve the business world. There is a lot of market demand for psychologists who can perform statistical analysis and research for businesses, government agencies, and universities.

Depending on the style of career that most appeals to you, you can find a psychology degree program that best suits your needs. Keep in mind that many programs will also require volunteer work or employment in your chosen field, so you may want to consider the availability of these as well when pursuing your education. Your location may determine which psychology careers are in the highest demand at the current time.
