Finding the School That is Right for You

from:

When choosing from psychology degree programs, the school that you choose will have a big impact on the programs that are available. It may also affect the type of jobs that you are able to get after graduation, or the type of work experience that is available in your area. Consider all the aspects of the school before choosing from the psychology degree programs.

One of the most important things to consider about a school is the curriculum. You will want to know that the psychology degree programs that are offered by the school have the same focus and philosophies as your interests do. You will also want to ensure that the clinical facilities are up to date with current medical standards. Learning with outdated equipment or resources can affect your job potential later on. If possible, take a tour of the school.

A major part of psychology degree programs focuses on the internships you are able to complete. Before choosing a school, you will want to know what types of sites are available. Some schools may work closely with local clinics or hospitals, so you may want to take a look around those. It might also be helpful to find out where the recent graduates of the school are doing their internships.

Another consideration for psychology degree programs is the location. The best school for your interests may not be in your home state, which might mean relocation for you. This has its own benefits, costs, and considerations. You might also think about if you are more comfortable working in an urban or a more suburban environment. When you tour the school, take time to look around the city as well. If you absolutely hate where you are living, you might find it difficult to focus on your studies.

Another consideration about programs in is the size. You will want to find a school with a good student to instructor ratio. However, keep in mind that having a better ratio does not always make it the best school. You may miss out on the ability to have challenging discourses if the student population is not diverse or large enough.

With all psychology degree programs, the cost of the school is a big factor. The ability to pay tuition is a foremost concern for many students. You may want to consider ahead of time whether you will qualify for financial aid or scholarships, or if you will need to get a part time job to help pay the bills. You might find it easier to afford by completing the basics of your program at a local school, and then transferring later on for your specialization courses.
