Psychology Degree Education Paths

from:

You may decide to enroll in psychology degree programs at any point in your life. Given the amount of time that it takes to get a degree, the earlier you start on your education path the better, though this is not always the case. Students with serious, real-life experiences tend to be more focused and mature students.

Psychology degree programs do take some time to complete, and the education path is a long one. It generally takes four years to earn your associate’s degree. After that there is an additional one to two years to earn a Master’s degree, and another five to six years to earn a doctorate. Some doctoral programs also require a one year internship.

You can start on your education path as early as high school to help prepare yourself for psychology degree programs. College preparatory courses are a good start. Your education path should include science, math, English, history, social studies, and a foreign language, with particular focus on science and math. If your school offers any courses in psychology you should take those as well as part of your education path, as these can give you a general overview of the field and different career options. You might also consider volunteering or working in a psychologist’s office or local hospital to gain experience.

The next step on your education path is to earn your bachelor’s degree. As with many undergraduate studies, psychology degree programs spend the first two years taking care of electives. By the time you reach your junior year of college, you will be ready to take psychology electives. This is also the best time to start planning the next step on your education path if you are sure that this is the career you would like to pursue. In some cases, as long as you have taken the basic electives in psychology you may not need a bachelor’s in order to get into one of the graduate psychology degree programs.

A Master’s degree is the next step on your education path. The requirements are generally few: background in introductory or general psychology, experimental psychology with a lab course, statistics, and a good GPA. Once you have enrolled in a Master’s program, you will most likely be required to take: industrial/organizational content, statistics, and research design, as well as ethics, assessment, program evaluation, and personality-related topics.

Whatever step you are on in your education path, make sure that you are consciously looking towards the future and your dream career. That way you can make conscious decisions on what is best for the goals you are going for.
