There are some highlights for psychologists in general. In most professional occupations, those working are employed through another party however, uncommonly enough, about one in four of all psychologists work for themselves through a private practice. Unless a psychologist is planning to work in a school setting, they will need to prepare to earn a doctorate degree before beginning to practice. Opportunities are limited for those who have only finished bachelor’s psychology degree programs. So the job opportunities are great for those who have the dedication to complete the needed psychology degree programs.
There are different highlights for the different specialties in psychology. For instance, clinical psychologists are the largest specialty, and often work in counseling centers, practices, hospitals, or clinics. They can help disturbed clients adjust to life or help medical patients deal with illnesses or injuries. Still others help people deal with personal crisis times. Some job highlights are that they often interview patients and give diagnostic tests. They may also provide psychotherapy or behavior modification programs. There are a variety of specialties in the field itself including: health psychology, neuropsychology, and geropsychology.
Counseling psychologists have the highlights of being able to use various techniques to advise people on how to deal with the issues that come up in everyday life. They may get to work in universities, hospitals, or practices.
School psychologists have the highlights of being able to work in schools to resolve students’ issues. They may work with teachers, parents, and other school personnel to improve strategies for substance abuse, disabilities, or gifted and talented programs.
Industrial-organizational psychologists have the highlights of being able to apply psychological principals and research methods to the workplace. They may be involved in researching management and marketing problems, conduct applicant screening, training and development. The might also work with management to improve productivity in the workplace.
Developmental psychologists have the highlights of studying the physiological, cognitive, and social development throughout a life. Some may specialize in infancy, childhood, or adolescence, while others focus on changes that occur with old age.
Regardless of the highlights, psychology degree programs can open the doors to a variety of careers that would not be available to you otherwise. Look into the highlights of whichever field you are considering to see if they match up with your interests and desires, then choose the program that works best for you.
